To save the hassle of deleting random threads about the new best viagra, could it be possible that when a user / bot wants to register to the forums he has to fill in a captcha of somesorts? this would help keep the forums clean of random accounts and useless threads.
Btw there is a captcha in place this is the sign-up screen also possibly ban all the 10minutemail and the like addresses?
tbh i used those verification captchas a lot and i never got a popup to enter anything so the chance of bots getting through is pretty high imo. and this http://devmd.com/r/bypassing-no-captcha-recaptcha-with-ubot so there are bots that can bypass it already.
They don't use temporary e-mails, it's always outlook/yahoo/gmail. StopForumSpam is already set up and working, which stops most of the spam. There are also other measures such as reCAPTCHA, Akismet, DNSBL and many other miscellaneous steps before registration is accepted. A general question might stop the bots for a while, but would likely be patched (into their botting program/s) fairly soon. It also wouldn't stop the human spammers. I do think that we should consider geoblocking all Pakistani (and possibly Indian) ip addresses though, as that is where the vast majority of the spammers originate. It wouldn't stop the botnets with UK/US ip addresses etc, but I'm very confident that the geoblock would stop at least 60% of the spam. It is difficult to bypass, since SFS will usually pick up on proxies/VPNs.
