    Half-Upgrading without bottlenecking.

    Yoyo,

It's that time again. I hustled up £180 and I can upgrade my PC (Well, some of it), So I decided to get a new graphics card (ATI Radeon HD4870) and 4GB (Corsair DDRII) RAM.

BUT, before I go ahead and purchase. I want to find out if it might bottleneck.

Specs are (excl. RAM & Gcard):

AMD Athlon x64 X2 Dual Core Processor +5200 (2.66GHz or something)
    500GB Space
    WINDOWZ PROFESSIONALZ

I might throw in a Blu Ray drive so I can watch Watchmen and Bolt n shit in supa' Blu Ray

All modern graphics cards have HD acceleration so you'll be fine for playing your blu-rays.

As for being "bottle necked" -- what resolution do you play at? If it's a low resolution then you'll be limited by your processor (1280 x 800 and less), but higher resolutions (1440 x 900 and above) will be more limited by your graphics card.

What PSU do you have too btw? Make sure it isn't crap/ likely to blow up :D

    1440x900 :)

Yeah the PSU is crap :P, i'll get that checked.

Yeah it may be a little bottle necked but as long as you are playing with AA and AF enabled then you should be fine :>

Just need to remember that if you're using 32 bit Windows that your RAM will be limited to 3.25GB ish :>

Your mum hustled up £180, you fucking spastic.

Why waste time upgrading, just buy a new machine.

The marginal improvement on the CPU isn't really worth the expense to be honest... may as well save it and put it towards a quad core processor for the future.

It would make a difference if they gpu was going to be bottlenecked by the cpu

Oh wait the 5200 is 2.7 mmm maybe it wont make that much difference

    Get this

    XFX 4870
    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/155497

    4GB Corsair 800Mhz Ram
    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/166785

    £131 inc P+P

Save the £20 and save up for a better cpu.

I'll get what apex suggested and a new case :)

Anyone have any opinions on this?

    Budget for case?
    What do you have currently?
    Better upgrade PSU perhaps instead?
