  1. How to play organized 6v6 games, called PickUpGames (pugs)

    1. Install Xchat/mIRC or any other IRC client.

this is a nice guide and will help for Xchat,
this and this will help for mIRC (i use it too, it's a bit better ;))
as a server you fill in "uk.quakenet.org"
Please choose a "nice" name as the Q bot will know you with THIS name.

    2. Get known to the Q bot.

After you have connected, you type
    /msg Q HELLO EMAIL EMAIL
EMAIL means your full email adress, like "x@y.com", 2 times there. if it's correct, you get mail. If not, the Q bot will tell you.

    3. Read your email.

There will be a line you have to copy out and paste into the chat, it looks like this:
    /msg Q@CServe.quakenet.org AUTH <your_name> <your_pass>
the password is random and you have to type THE WHOLE LINE after connecting to the channel.
Additional info (automatic authentication) can be found here

    4. connect to the pickup channel.

    type
    /join #mpuktf2.pickup
    in the message box.

    5. Get Ventrilo installed and working.

If you dont, you get banned from the games. Ventrilo is MUST-HAVE.
    Download
    Setup Help
Add the ventrilo server, BEFORE step 6.
    IP: 85.236.100.69
    port: 28960
    password: tf2pickupVent

    6. Add yourself to a game.

    type
    !add
to add yourself to a gather. After there are 12 players added, the "TF2PickupBot" will message you and give you info about the ventrilo channel and TF2 Server. IF YOU WANT TO PLAY MEDIC, you have to write "!medic" or "!med"
If you CANT play (your mum asking for help, your PC doing shit, whateva...) type
    !del or !remove
BEFORE there are 12 players. If you add yourself to a gather and dont show up you get a 24h ban, do it multiple times and it will be permanent.

You find the official rules thread here, READ THEM.

    Questions:

I still haven't got a clue, what is this about?
Basically it's about playing organized 6v6 pickup games, called PUGs.

Where can I see how many matches I've played/other things?
The official stats page is here.

Why the hell should I play them?
    1. Because you play with people who are better than you, you learn from ETF2L/ESL/TheSGL/pro players, sometimes even from Division 1.
    2. Because IT OWNS, it's fun and you should know how the *pro players* play the game.

To say it differently: Because you are here to improve your gaming skills, not to "pwn n00bs" who dont know how to ubercharge or disguise and stand around in spawn, spamming in their broken microphones *an..ev..yone...ear me*...

But when I play them alone, I dont become a better team player, as my mates are not there!
*BONK* trust me you will, and you learn tactics as well. And tell your team to do it too.

I still dont see why I should do it...
Less QQ, more pew pew please. You want to become better, right? These games are very intense and take up max. 30 minutes, or 6 round wins if that's faster. Mostly etf2l rules.

I got pwned hard/they insulted me.

 Just do what they say, and dont violate the rules. (CL2, ML1 there, and Demoman limit 1 too.)
Remember, they are the good players, you are just another noob they dont know for them.

    I have another important question...
Just spam below, i'll try to answer it.

  2. Re: To anyone who is interested in improving his TF2 skills

[rant] actually i'm quite disappointed by the general lack of interest according to these pugs. [/rant]

come on guys, i told you why and how, it's your turn now. I've about 35 Pugs and it's way more interesting than any 32 player rocket spamming.
Only Core played 4 (long ago) and no one else i think.

  3. Re: To anyone who is interested in improving his TF2 skills

    ElectroMagnetic^ played at least one.

I'm going to next week. I'm already known by Q ;)
i'm still waiting for this fu**ing confirmation mail...
and no it's not in the spam folder...

    EDIT: worked with gmail account!

  4. Re: To anyone who is interested in improving his TF2 skills

Actually i forgot about this, sounds like fun so i will look into it sometime soon :)

  5. Re: To anyone who is interested in improving his TF2 skills

ah yes, he played 4 too, just looked it up :D
    sry.
Hope to shoot you in the head soon (i play Medic/Sniper there)

  6. Re: To anyone who is interested in improving his TF2 skills

    another nice thing...
dont join when you didnt ADD to a gather.
They will just write down the SteamID and f2 will ban you. (You had luck mate. no one did.)

edit: Myke, post your resume here :D
You liked it (we got pwned badly)?

  7. Re: To anyone who is interested in improving his TF2 skills

    My resume:
Well, you get a better feeling of how to play certain maps. And you get a feeling how it will be on ETF2L. Every F members should really play at least 5 times there!! There is just one problem, people seam to not like playing medic, so it might happen from time to time, that you can't play your favorite class. AND you'll probably get owned the first timeS.

After you have played there some time, you'll know that you have to improve ;) At least this counts for me. Hope you do better than i did.

  8. Re: How to play organized 6v6 games, called PickUpGames (pugs)

If you are afraid of PUGs cause you don't know how this 6vs6 matches should be played, than it might be a good idea to watch them via SourceTV live first, before you actually start playing one. Furthere information here

To find out on which server matches are played atm you can:
    - look it up in the pickup channel
    - have a look in ventrillo (there is a channel for each server on ventrillo and they are named server 1-4)
    or
    - add the match servers to you favorites and have a look there. (matchserver != sourceTV server! you mustn't join the match server and play as spectator!) (this is the way i do it)

    Their match servers are:
    # Server 1: 85.236.101.186:27315
    # Server 2: 85.236.101.186:27415
    # Server 3: 85.236.101.186:27515

    some generall information here

I will be there as well ASAP.

  13. Re: How to play organized 6v6 games, called PickUpGames (pugs)

    105 pugs and counting :D
Everyone should try it once, even if you get flamed at the beginning.

  14. Re: How to play organized 6v6 games, called PickUpGames (pugs)

kk have everything set up, tomorrow i will play! (and get slaughtered :) )

  15. Re: How to play organized 6v6 games, called PickUpGames (pugs)

    another important thing...
make sure you are *fast* on the server, as these guys suck ass in terms of being nice and organized. They have a "rule" which isnt a rule: "The last one to join plays Medic".
Because no one wants to play Med ;)

Re: How to play organized 6v6 games, called PickUpGames (pugs)

Oh man... 12 PUGs so far, played with the Byte, the oPlaid, the Jh, the Runesky -- I have walked with the giants (and got pawned like never b4). *sigh* Theres only one way - up. No easy anything in pickup games, everythin must be done the hard way. One must outsmart them to get a single kill... and how should that be possible? One thing I know for sure - no better place to learn. Only a diamond can cut a diamond... and everything else as well.

  17. Re: How to play organized 6v6 games, called PickUpGames (pugs)

True words. There is no easy kill in PUGs.

  18. Re: How to play organized 6v6 games, called PickUpGames (pugs)

    i've around 120 pugs *e-peen +1* :D

"the" before player names... tru dat ;)
But also think about the fact that there are still many unknown players, and many of them also suck. The pugs are the best place at the moment, and it rocks. sometimes the games are very unbalanced, i had one with 3 known players....
