Steam Client very slow

For the past couple of days my steam client has been incredibly poor.

It struggles when I try to do anything with it, e.g. chat with someone. It will take about 10-20 seconds for the letters to appear, and if i make a mistake and want to highlught something, it generally doesn't highlight. Also when trying to go through my library, it runs very slowly.

Games are running fine, so I'm pretty sure it's only the steam client.

Edit: It turns out that using shift+tab for chat works fine.

Has anyone got any suggestions on improving the speed?

Same issue, I just tend to use via browser if I'm on desktop. .

 

Reinstalling steam has worked. However I might have fucked up GTA 5 and may have to redownload as a consequence.

 

As long as you have all gamedata and the appmanifest file you should be alright moving the games around too the new install of steam.

It could be built up caches not being deleted often enough causing this, but repairing the install has worked for me a few times as well.

 

Ok it's all fixed and all my hgames are now back (my brother mucked about with the files till Steam realised GTA was already installed).
Yeah so if anyone else has (or had this problem) just move your steamapps folder, delete everything in the steam folder except for steam.exe, relaunch steam, close steam, move the steamapps folder back into the steam folder and then relaunch steam and you're done.

 

and it's happening again... I don't want to have to reinstall steam each week...

E: Closing + restarting steam seemed to quick fix this.

 

You could try the Faster Steam Client mod, which costs 9 GBP, and relies on the Steam Script Extender, which costs 30 GBP per month. Also, you'll need to buy Skyrim and Dawnguard DLC.
