Do we have Copyright on Balloon_race? This morning (of the 18th) I saw a server with balloon_race but it wasn't a GM's. So I was wondering whether they are allowed? This map is made by GM and they just copied in onto their map rotation. Server's IP: 193.178.147.188:27021 Just wondering whether they can just copy a map and use it...

Re: Do we have Copyright on Balloon_race? All the content is copyright of valve, because it's their content that is being used. The only thing that is copyright of either me or Chuckstar is the little Ad in the spawn. @Kj, I edited it with the authors consent.

Mainly the copyright belongs to valve since its their models, textures, engine, code, sound etc. The level design itself belongs to the first author and he decide what to do with it... and often they release them for free with the only requirement that you either link to them or that they made some kind of commercial into the map. And if someone changes his map then it becomes the 3rd person in the copyright led I think. Erik

Re: Do we have Copyright on Balloon_race? The map is, afaik, simply a binary representation of entities, brushes and visibility information from every point to every point. While the information in the bsp is entirely the work of Geit and Chuckstar (and possibly a bit from me too), it would be useless without Valve's software. I dunno... legal stuff is confusing Anyway back on topic, other servers using our map is a good thing - free publicity
Re: Do we have Copyright on Balloon_race? Well, according to that everything Valve makes is property of Windows or Mac or whatever OS they use. This continues until we conclude that the caveman who "invented" fire owns everything? Copyright laws are crap tbh.
