They boast about our university having the fastest internet speed in the world only rivaled by (google) campus of stanford university. It's pretty dependant where your student flat is situated because of the use of the copper wires they use to connect the the nodes or whatever bla bla fuck you. Also I live with 11 people in a 12 people apartment/flat because we have one room for a server. It's kind of a hobby project of some of the guys here. It's uploading and downloading a fucking shitton 24/7 and is widely known across the campus. It's pretty kewl. Terabites of music/movies/porn and series literally a mouseclick away playing instantly.
Virgin used to run heavy traffic shaping on their DSL packages a few years ago, not sure if they still do, but it's probably pretty likely what's causing your crap speeds. Is BT Infinity not in your area? (or short of that, a decent 3G/4G provider)
Again, it's if we can afford it. We're also still on copper cabling so we can't get a tremendous speed boost.
BT Infinity is FTTC, meaning the last mile still uses the copper cables, if your cabinet has fibre, you have Infinity. The cables to my house are literally rotting and BT Infinity still works fine. I don't know anything about your financial situation, but it's £26p/m (+ Line rental) for 76mb with unlimited usage or £15p/m for 36mb with 40GB cap..
At the moment I think we're paying something like £13 for broadband and a phone line. My Mum seems to think it's the area we're in and won't change provider. I evne offered to pay for the majority of the monthly bill myself but she's so adamant that there it's the area we're in ._.
